Vision, Leadership and The Unique ME!

It would be true to say that the key to leadership is having clear vision and a strong reason why which you can articulate to all your stakeholders (staff, community and clients) . When a CEO or head of department leads his or her team in a modern management style, rather than the old dictatorial style of management of yester year, she needs to solicit buy-in to the direction the company wants to go.

There is no better way of achieving buy-in than from a place of authenticity. Share the reason why you need to or want to think and move in a certain direction or speak and act in a certain way. This is the basis of authenticity. People buy people and they buy people that they know like and trust. If the leaders of a company can keep aligned with their own ethics and those of the company, more people will buy-in, follow and trust and support the vision and projects that support it.

If people can’t buy in to a company vision, mission or reason why, they can be very damaging to a business. They can be the bad apple in the barrel and upset and disrupt co-workers and even tarnish the reputation of the business if their dissatisfaction reaches client or public ears.

Being aware that employees have this power to disrupt is important and can affect the way you want to recruit staff in the first place. Recruit on passion and not on desperation. When you interview and hear a sad story that makes you feel down or are in the presence of someone with enthusiasm who makes you feel inspired – which would you want to bring in to your inner circle and have represent your business?

More importantly is for department heads and CEO’s to understand their power, their Unique ME! Their personal ‘reason why’.

Employees want to work for a company who have a policy to do the right thing AND who are seen to be putting it into practice.

Companies with a strong company ethos to improve social responsibility not just to make them look good but because it’s the right thing to do. Good for business, good for the community and good for employees. This triple bottom line is seen as sustainable. They have to ensure that their ethics are transparent and congruent in their actions because they are under a great deal of scrutiny. Banks and financial intuitions are no longer trusted as they once were as they have lost sight of their ethics and lost trust not only of their clients but the community at large. Lack of trust and lack of accountability, uncertainly in the ethics of the people can cause a brand to suffer when too many no longer trust your brand. Without trust in your brand, no one will want to do business with you. So its back to basics time, way from the hype and a time of rediscovery of the reason why you are in business, a time of self discovery of your Unique ME! And how you can positively convey that to your staff, your community and your clients.
